King Edward VI School
Stratford-Upon-Avon,
Warwickshire, England
This school, sometimes referred to as "Shakespeare's School", is the school William is believed to have attended as a boy. It was only a
short distance from his home on Henley Street and he would have been given an impressive education there. Elizabethan children were schooled in
grammar, arithmetic, religion, classical mythology, Latin, Greek, and philosophy.
Due to a fall in the family's fortunes, it is thought that William had to leave
school at thirteen or fourteen to help his father run the family business. Nothing is known of him afterwards until his marriage to Anne Hathaway in 1582 when he was eighteen years of age.
Shakespeare's Schoolroom is open to the public. Visiting hours are limited, however, as the building is still a school today!
