Mary, Queen of Scots, (1542-1587) was the daughter of King James V of Scotland and his french wife, Mary of Guise. She became Queen of Scotland just a few days after her birth in 1542 when her father died. She was in line to the throne of England because her grandmother, Margaret, was Henry VIII's elder sister, who became Queen of Scotland in 1503 upon her marriage to King James IV of Scotland. Mary, Queen of Scots, was thus a rival to Queen Elizabeth I and was executed in 1587 for conspiring with Roman Catholics to oust the Tudor Queen.
